Virginia Club of New York: Playground of Empathy Pride Month Experience

June 21, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

You are invited to celebrate Pride Month by walking in the shoes of a UVA community member!

Empathable is a journey of walking in many others’ shoes — a point-of-view film, centered on real moments in the lives of real people, that radically increases the amount of empathy participants have for other members of their community. The experience puts us in the shoes of someone else; we leave with exposure to difference, the single most scientifically influential factor in disarming bias and building empathy.

In this immersive session, we’ll explore identity and intersectionality through empathy-building exercises. Then we’ll have the opportunity to meet “J”, a nonbinary community member of UVA and Charlottesville, stepping in their shoes and viewing some of their real lived experiences through their eyes. We’ll also have chances for discussion.

Your $5 ticket will be donated to the UVA LGBTQ Center. Registrants will receive the Zoom link via email prior to the event. We ask that participants register by 12:00 p.m. on the day of the event. If you have questions, email us at uvanyc@uvanyc.org.

About Empathable and Playground of Empathy: Playground of Empathy was established in 2018 in Charlottesville after seeing how a dearth of emotional education has led to xenophobia and polarization. Playground of Empathy has been collaborating with UVA, UVA’s Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and the Provost’s Office since 2019.

This event is #open to all alumni, friends, and families.
